When doing a "rest" in between sets does one hold the current position still or completely rest?

Such as in pushups, in between sets of pushups, when taking a rest does one still hold the pushup position? Or do they completely relax for the alloted 'rest' time? This may seem trivial and something everyone should know. Hence, I'm asking to confirm that I truly "know" this piece of general knowledge and will solidify it in memory. Thanks very much
