What does "spikes and troughs" mean?

usually applied to a signal that has somewhat of a wave form. spikes are high points and troughs are low points. In fact, spikes are unusually high peaks; peaks would be the equivalent opposite of a trough. All wave-form phenomena manifest peaks and troughs; spikes are anomalies usually. rogue waves.
